FAQ's
What are hardwood chips?
Hardwood chips are the perfect materials for a wide range of outdoor applications and uses including for garden pathways, flower beds, flower borders, children’s play areas, and more. Hardwood chips are similar to bark fines and mulch but hardwood chips are actually much more hard wearing and provide better durability. Hardwood chips are ideal for decorative purposes, as well as being fantastic for functionality. Collections of these wooden chips are available to purchase directly from our Formby and Wigan sites.
What are the main benefits?
There are a multitude of benefits when it comes to using hardwood chips for small to medium-sized gardening projects. Choosing top-quality hardwood chippings are often the perfect option to retain soil moisture and prevent the loss of excessive water from your soil. Moreover, they also naturally break down completely over time. As a result of this natural process, essential nutrients will be added to the beds of your garden. Further benefits of wooden chips for your garden include helping to repel pests, controlling weed growth, and also preventing soil erosion.
What are common ways that they are used?
One of the most common ways that wooden chips are used is for paths and walkways. Wooden chips are extremely soft, safe and they are really easy to implement. They are ideal for being used for pathways and walks because they add that much-needed layer of protection which helps to slow down the growth and even suppress weeds. Other common examples of where wooden chips are used include for raised bets, mushroom cultivation, and more.
How long do they last for?
Hardwood chips normally last for anywhere between 2-5 years and require no maintenance whatsoever. However, we do recommend refreshing the location of the chips at least every year or so to keep on top of them and maintain full functionality and aesthetics. The lifespan of the chips is dependent on external factors such as direct sunlight, and surrounding damp grounds.
